A Very Olsen Website- Media Mediation 3

As all of my good friends know, I have an obsession with the Olsen Twins. Since their years on Full-House (How much do you miss Uncle Joey?), I have been following them non-stop. From their products lines to articles in page six, I love everything Olsen! I even have them framed in my apartment! It’s a sick obsession, but one that I love!

The reason why I am writing about the Olsen twins is to share with the world my obsession with VeryMaryKate.com! It is a spoof on Mary Kate Olsen and her life and just how “hard” it really is. Each skit on this website is absolutely hilarious and mocks MK so bad, but that’s what happens when you’re a celebrity! Check out one of the original videos below!

(Moving Day- Youtube.com)

I have been obsessed with this website for a while now, and quite recently, I have been posting it on my Facebook page and on Twitter. The amounts of comments and messages I get about this site are AMAZING! So many people just say little comments like “Oh Butler, you would post that” or “This is stupid…” but the majority of people LOVE LOVE LOVE VeryMaryKate.com! So many of my friends are now quoting this site and its absolutely hilarious! This just shows you the power of Facebook. By just posting a simple little link, so many people now know about one of my guilty pleasures in life…VeryMaryKate.com!

Here are some quotes that I find absolutely hilarious:

-MK: “Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something small to nibble on…”

-MK: “Hey, Jewish looking girl…” (Not PC but hilarious)

-MK reading out of Ashley’s Diary: “Dear Diary, last night bodyguard and I kissed, it was awesome…I love pretty dresses.”

-MK: "I'm still pretty full from looking at a picture of an English Muffin yesterday..."

Actually, just got to the website and check out all the videos!!!! HILARIOUS STUFF!

FLY ME AWAY- Media Meditation 3

These commercials are pure genius!!!!!

(Amazon Kindle, Youtube.com)

Over the past year, I have seen this commercial so many times and I must admit that every time I watch it, I really want to purchase a Kindle!!! This just shows how powerful a creative commercial can be!

I personally do not read for enjoyment. I have zero patience and mainly stick to reading blogs and online articles, but I find that the Kindle is a great alternative to books. You can download any book, novel, or short story that you want in sixty seconds! This product is just one sign of the shift that our society is taking towards technology.

Since the Kindle’s release, there are other products that have come out, such as the i-Pad, that all help bring books to one’s fingertips quickly and effectively. One thing that I have been noticing on television is the shift in children’s products.

Recently, I saw a commercial for a children’s e-book. It’s a Kindle for Kids!!!!!!

V.Reader Interactive E-Reading System is a new product that helps make reading more exciting and interactive for kids! I think this is a great product and will help children learn to read at a quicker rate, but don’t you think it’s a little much? What happened to the good old days of mom or day coming into your room and grabbing your favorite book off the shelf and tucking you into bed just so you can hear the same story for the 200th time!

Hungry Caterpillar- one of the best books EVER!

This shift in our society towards technology is amazing, but I think it is a double-edged sword. The developmental process of children is going to accelerate at a very quick rate due to new products just like V. Reader has released. Children are going to grow up quickly and become very technologically advanced and basically loose their innocence. I don’t know if this will happen for sure, but it is just my opinion on what the future holds.

If our society keeps taking steps just like this exposing our youth to technologies originally made for adults, where are we going to be in 10 years? Is there going to be a Facebook made especially for pre-schoolers and grammar school children? This is why our society needs to take our shift towards technology at a slow rate, especially when it comes to the youth of our world.

Midterm Reflections- ALL I WANT IS AN A!

1. Over the past eight weeks, we have learned quite a lot, mainly about our “power tools” and how they apply to media. This is one of the most important things that I have learned. In the beginning, I was not that comfortable applying our power tools but after having quite a lot of practice, I feel that I have mastered applying all four tool sets. I came to this realization after our midterm. After watching the Bahamas video for the first time, I was not sure how to exactly apply the tool sets but then I realized, I need to think like a marketer. After watching it a second and third time, I realized that applying the four tool sets is actually very easy. All I needed to do was think of why the commercial was created, how the message is being sent, and who the commercial is targeted towards. After I put myself into the marketing mind-set, each tool set came to me very easily. These four tool sets are the most important thing that I think anyone can take away from this class. They are going to be extremely important in any of my future careers in marketing.

2. The most important thing that I have learned about myself is that I need to think outside the box and take in others opinions. I am a very strong and opinionated person and in the past, this can be seen in my writing. Now, I am learning that I need to take a step back from my own opinions and apply other people’s views and idea’s to my own writing. I need to be more willing to understand why others think the way they do and that my opinion is not necessarily the right opinion.

3. The one thing that I think I would do differently would be writing down our assignments. There were a few blog posts that I submitted late (some due to the fact that I was deathly sick) but for me, I always tend to forget about assignments that are online and not in a syllabus. This is why online classes do not work for me! By having the assignment written down, I will always have them with me. Maybe I should start using my blackberry to keep track of my assignments!

4. One thing that I think would be really great for the class would be doing a weekly assignment where each student can find a commercial, advertisement or any form of media and share how the power tools are used. I think this would be a good idea because it can show us all how our power tools can apply to many different forms of media. Having an assignment like this would help me think outside the box more and see how the power tools can apply to forms of media that I am not really exposed to.

5. As on can see, I have more than enough good things to say about our power tools. The four tool sets are all very important and have become extremely useful for myself this semester. The quizzes we have week by week are very good practice, especially when it comes to applying the power tools. The quizzes force us all to read and learn and this is why I find it is a very good way to get students to study. I feel the course blog is a very good idea to get to the class interactive online, but one thing I do not like is using BLOGGER. I am trying to get use to blogger but I just prefer Tumblr and that is my only complaint about the course blog. I love seeing what everyone posts week to week and it is good to see other students’ views, opinions, and ideas. My personal blog is amazing, but sadly, its not the one we use for our class. The blog that I created for our class is a great place for me to get out my views on media and our society. Now that I look at it, I realize that it is good using another blog vs. my own personal blog because my personal blog is all about fashion! Doing monthly media meditations is a great idea because it makes us apply what we are doing in class to the real world. I actually really enjoy doing the media meditations because I can get very creative with them.

As for the books we have read in class, I think that Media and Society has been my favorite. The reason for this is because it opened my eyes to so many things about television and the entertainment industry. One example would be that I had no idea that racisms still was on the air, especially dealing with the news. I find every chapter of this book to be very informational and I will never look at television the same way. Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death was a pretty good book, but I found it to be a very boring read. A lot of the things that Postman discussed was discussed in more detail in Media in Society. This is my third time reading Feed and I absolutely love that book. I really think that in the future everyone will have their cell phones programmed into their brain. All of these books are great learning tools, but I feel that Media and Society was the one book that I learned a lot of new things from. Being a marketing major, a lot of the things discussed in the other books are all things that I have learned in previous classes. Media and Society opened my eyes to the world of media.

UCC Plant- Bhopal, India (Google Images)

15: "Bhopal Water Still Toxic Twenty-fiver Years After Deadly Gas Leak
Censored 101

December 2, 1984, 500,000 people in central India (Bhopal) were poisoned by about forty tons of toxic gases from an abandoned chemical insecticide plant.
-Union Carbide Corporation (UCC)- US owned
-Remains today to be one of the worst industrial disasters in history

8,000 people were killed instantly by methyl isocynate, phosgene and other toxic gases
20,000 more people harmed the following weeks and months
520,000 exposed people still had poison in blood stream
-Permanent lung, liver, kidney, and immune system damages, and blindness

Toxic chemicals leaked into many water supplies within a 2 mile radius of the plant which spread to more than 30,000 people

What does the UCC have to say about this?
Union Carbide Corporation- now Dow Chemical Company

-Claim to have over 60 years of research on methyl isocyanate as "trade secrets"
-Dow held out information and funds to help victims
-Victims could only get local treatment
-24 research studies conducted on victims has yet to be released

"EMPLOYEE SABOTAGE!"
http://www.unioncarbide.com/history/index.htm

20 years later, Dow finally takes the BLAME!!!!!!

(Google search, YouTube.com)

-Dow paid $470 million compensation to the government of India
-Survivors got a check for 25,000 rupee (About $500)

Does this seem fair to those poisoned by this toxic gas leak???

This story had world wide coverage. By just looking up Bhopal, India, hundreds of articles and related material appear about this toxic gas leak. Searching Lexis-Nexus, there were about 1,000 articles that came up from around the world. There was one article that stood out discussing what happened to 8 UCC Executives charged with negligence.

http://www.lexisnexis.com.cobalt.champlain.edu/hottopics/lnacademic/?

INTERESTING FACT: 25 years after the toxic gas leak, eight former executives of the company's Indian subsidiary -- including one who has since died -- were convicted Monday of negligence. The seven surviving defendants were sentenced to two years in prison and fined 100,000 rupees, or $2,100 (Polgreen-Kumar, internet).

This story is not censored throughout the world. To this day, there is still media coverage in Bhopal about the toxic spill. There are articles and video's of people still protesting the plant and still fighting with Dow Chemical Company.

Here is a link to an article published by The Times of India released on July 3rd, 2010.
