DAMN THAT GIRL HAS CURVES- Media Meditation 2

(Photo taken by moi on my Blackberry)

Working at Monelle in Burlington, I am exposed to many different forms of fashion media. There are so many companies that send our store catalogs and look books so that we will carry their lines. Ever year, we tend to get the same companies that send us the same things over and over again, but this year, there was one company that really stood out to us.

We carry a very limited selection of women’s bras and panties (ugh I HATE THIS WORD) and this year we got a look book from CloStudio and I was shocked. As I went through the look book with a co-worker, we were astonished by the model. SHE WAS A FULL FIGURED AND CURVEY WOMAN! It was amazing to see this!

One of my biggest pet peeves about the fashion industry is the notion that all models must be 5’11 and 110lbs. It is just not achievable by the average, everyday woman. This is why I love to see when designers and labels start putting curvier women in their advertisements! Here is a link to a fashion show that is all about curvier women. One Stop Plus, an online plus size women’s clothing store, presents one of the first all plus size fashion show at New York Fashion Week. The clothes look just as good on these curvy women!

The look book and this fashion show are just two examples of companies trying to make a difference in the fashion world. The current major fashion media is all magazine based. For years, women have been given this obscure view of what is beautiful and there has been much scrutiny over it. This is why designers need to consider all body sizes beautiful.

The world of fashion revolves around “Beautiful People”, which is a great marketing technique, but I am beyond ecstatic to see companies just like CloStudio include curvier women in their looks. I just think that it helps women throughout the world feel confident in themselves and shows that not everyone has to be 5’11 and 110lbs.

HOW AMAZING WAS THAT!

This is a clip from this weeks “Glee”, one of the best new shows on Fox. This weeks’ episode was all about Britney Spears and even guest starred the infamous Ms. Spears. Every week, some of the girls from work and I always get together, make dinner, and watch and obsess of Glee! This week’s episode was one of the best that I have seen.

The reason why I am talking about this episode is because while we were watching it this week, a girl friend and myself got into a little argument. As we were watching the episode, I was discussing how one of the stars of the show “Britney S. Peirce” aka Heather Morris, is a professional dancer and went on tour with Beyonce and performed her infamous “Single Ladies” dance. My friend did not believe me so I told her to “GOOGLE IT!”

She picked up her blackberry and went straight to YouTube and VOILA, she found Heather Morris dancing right next to Beyonce!

The reason why I am explaining this story is to show how dependent our society has become on technology. Even the simplest arguments are solved by using our smart phones and the internet! Neil Postman, author of Amusing Ourselves to Death, discusses “how our own tribe (society) is undergoing a vast and trembling shift from the magic of writing to the magic of electronics.” The internet has become a place where any question can be solved and we have so many new devices that bring the internet to our fingertips. The days of reading books and writing essays are in the past, and technology has fully taken control!

My group of friends and I always say “Google it” whenever we want to settle an argument. I find this to be sad and very tragic. We have become so dependent on technology that we can easily go onto our cell phone and go on the Internet to find out information, just to prove a point…SAD!

"Nip" slip on the runway!

Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Butler (aka Butler or Butts) and this is my first official post on my blog. Being new to Blogger, I never thought that I would like it, but after learning more about this blogging site, I must admit, I have become a huge fan!

I am originally from New York, but my parents currently reside in Northern New Jersey, so I guess I can now call myself a "Jersey boy". People throughout the country have this notion about the "arm pit" of America and think that it is filled with pollution, guido's, and fist pumping, but that is not the case! Northern New Jersey is in a league of it's own! The one thing that we do have from Northern NJ that I am quite annoyed with are "The Real Housewives of New Jersey", pictured above. I would just like to say that I do not know one woman that is like any of these fine little Italian ladies. They are just NOT OK in my book!

Enough of New Jersey!!!!!!!!! (As you can tell, I'm not exactly the biggest fan...)

For the past four years, I have been working a Monelle, clothing and accessories for a fabulous living. Fashion is something that really drives me. I have developed my own sense of style, which is extremely preppy, and everyone knows me for that. This is why Monelle is the perfect fit for me! Working at Monelle, I am exposed to many different forms of media, mainly magazines, where I learn about all the current trends. Over the summer, Chanel, one of my favorite high end lines, released their Spring/Summer 2010 Campaign and guess where they shot the entire thing? SHELBURNE FARMS!

Karl Lagerfeld, the head designer for Chanel, has a house on the Grand Isles, and was very inspired by Vermont. This was one media experience I will never forget. When I opened the magazine and saw the advertisements for the first time, I was beyond excited. Karl even decided to use Vermont as an inspiration for a fashion show during Paris fashion week. (Below is the video of his show!)

Since I am discussing my love for fashion, I need to discuss some things about our society and the media. I love Twitter, where anyone can live Tweet any event. This has changed the way people receive information about fashion. Going to any Fashion Week throughout the world is a huge experience! People that can't gain access to this shows can now follow designers and people live Tweeting fashion shows! I think it's amazing! The one thing that I can't stand about our society is how the fashion industry portrays the perfect body image for women. Not everyone can be 5'11 and 110 lbs. This is why I think that fashion needs to make a shift away from this skinny body image and go more towards a natural, more curvy image! It is just more realistic!

Over the years, my family has noticed my love for fashion and my preppy style. This is why in the future I want to open my own clothing store, inspired by Monelle. I want it to be aimed towards men and boys, but also carry a limited selection of woman's clothing. I have been working on a business plan for about two years now and I really hope that my dream of having my own store comes true!

Well, that is all for now!

I hope that everyone enjoys reading my blog over the next few months!

Cheers!
